Happy Groundhog Day!

A “water view” at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort in Florida. Not a bad view. If a groundhog sees this view, it goes outside. Until it rains, and it does rain.

Pandora is pretty sweet

A random view of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I’m not sure any photos can do justice to Pandora so I didn’t bother trying. The most remarkable thing about the place is that it made me think a few Avatar sequels might be worth doing. I’m a sucker for pretty things.

Good Morning, Jacksonville

Joffrey’s Coffee table tent beside a nice warm cup of coffee. King Joffrey’s Coffee? Easily the worst Game of Thrones tie-in I’ve seen. Last night’s episode wasn’t as good as this coffee.

On the Road Again

The Groundhog is driving. Because someone has to do it. If the groundhog sees their shadow, they know they’re driving away from the Sun. There was little chance of that today. Easy driving and hard rain most of the way from Jacksonville to Orlando.

Goodnight, Disney World

Cinderella’s Castle is lit up at night behind a crowd of people on Disney World’s Main Street USA. The rain started outside of Jacksonville and ended outside of Orlando. Humidity was off the charts but the temperature wasn’t bad. The record high so far this trip: 91 degrees, shortly before the rain hit.

Kicking the Blot Tires

Can I…

Can I easily create posts from my iPhone or iPad as well as from a computer? If no, this thing isn’t going to happen. There are several options for creating posts for specific dates; folders names with the dates in a few different formats, metadata text in the post file, file names, or even doing nothing and using the file date. Having those options is nice but if I use a combinations of all of those, the source repo will look like a jumbled mess (to me only) so I should probably choose one and stick to it.

Can I use Working Copy for the entire process?

Can I use Ulysses for writing and export the markdown files straight into Working Copy in a format that will “just work”?

Can I add photos to posts without too much trouble? Here’s a random photo from the corner of Tryon & 4th yesterday morning.

Can I edit this template into something a little better suited for the high honor of presenting my content personal brand blog?

Will I…

Will I actually do any of this? That is the real question.

I realized a few days ago that I didn’t post a single blog post here after losing my desire to work with Squarespace. I did post a few to the sirshannon microblog, which cross posts to twitter and Mastodon.

I posted a lot of pics to Instagram but, like my twitter posts, those are deleted after a while. Twitter posts last a fortnight before being automatically deleted. I keep 9 pics on Instagram and delete one each time I post one. However, I recently gave up on the shitty Instagram app slowing it’s acceleration toward Facebook-level annoyance. I deleted the Instagram app once again, for now. Wake me when it’s good.

The Blottening

Wherein the Squarespace blog is exported (which includes the wordpress blog posts that were exported) and imported into a new Blot site.

Blot lets me create posts via markdown and push via git, that’s basically all I need. It was easy to set up, including some node code that created posts from my exported Squarespace posts xml file. It was node and wasn’t really documented, which was a small bit of pain that can be easily fixed for future users (hey, I even filed an issue for it). The larger pain was that the last time I installed node it was on version 0.something so that was an hour of chasing my tail, uninstalling and reinstalling dependencies. Not bad at all, really. One hour is less than the time it takes to fix any issue I have with fastlane’s dependencies so I consider tonight to be a huge win.

So it looks like Blot will be my new blog host instead of the “Web Product” macOS-based static site generator I was working on for a hot minute during the Summer. I’ll keep sirshannon.com at Squarespace for now and use it as a landing page that links to the various other sites. Squarespace has a good enough page creation functionality for me. For now. Maybe. We’ll see.
